There are many fascinating items in this portfolio. Eugene Moore, public relations manager for Armstrong, had a signature that consistently trespassed into the content of each letter that he signed. The unique stationery for the Century Letter Company had a flap that gave an envelope-like appearance to it, even though it was not an envelope. Between 1963 and 1968, The American Crayon Company did a complete overhaul on their letterhead. The International Minerals & Chemical Corporation used a letterhead that put an environmentally green spin on their presentation to others. The IBM logo, without horizontal lines running through it, had not yet been given a facelift by its creator Paul Rand.
As with other portfolios, the items to which designers have been ascribed appear after all the items preceded by a dash. The items beginning with a dash indicate items for which the designers have not been identified.

Not to get too technical, but the text from all of the correspondences appear to be from a standard typewriter except for the one from Walter Landor and Associates. What technology would they have had in-house in 1962 to give their responses such a different look? The color and font definitely made it stand out.
Thank you for hanging on to these samples for so long, Frank, and for sharing them. I would’ve naively purged them a long time ago in an office move or a spring cleaning. Makes me wonder what other treasures you have hidden in your office, you pack rat 🙂
Michael, you are correct to qualify me as a pack rat. Even though I have regularly purged much stuff through the years, a fair quantity of boxes and art-related material populate both my office at Dawson College and my studio. I am glad that the cover letters that comprise the letterhead collection were never thrown out; they have emerged from the darkness to bring many people much excitement and hopefully inspire them as well.
Just to whet people’s appetites, there is a 48″ x 36″ x7″ wooden crate in my studio storage that was among my father’s possessions and that I have never opened. I wonder what’s inside. Eventually I’ll get to it.
About the neat dull red text in the Walter Landor and Associates cover letter: my thought was that the letter was produced on a new or very well maintained typewriter with a unique font and a special color ink ribbon. Notice the letter “e” seems to vary in its appearance through the course of the text. Wouldn’t that kind of inconsistent look in the weight of a letter be what one would expect from a typewriter?
Perhaps a typewriter specialist could help us out.
